The Scoop on Lake Tahoe Skiing and Snowboarding
remembering a great hike in Martis Valley Tahoe
March 17th, 2010A locals guide to Tahoes good eats!!
February 28th, 2010
In addition to being a ski snob – as in I don’t make a day of it unless its 1- Good Snow and 2- a little sunny, I am also a food snob. It’s not that I must dine at only Tahoe’s finest Bistros – no its that I like good food combined with a good dining experience at a good price. So friends I am going to share my 25 years of slope side eating adventures with you – be sure to bookmark for future reference.
Best Breakfasts – South Shore – Ernies and the Red Hut – Ernies is a long time local breakfast spot – if your coming up HWY 50 on your way to Heavenly – or going from South SHore to Kirkwood – stop at this great little place on Hwy 50 just past the Y and order up. The Red Hut now has two locations – one conveniently on Kingbury Grade on your way up the Heavenly’s Nevada side – the waffles are made hot on the spot and yummy. I say you can alwasys tell a good breakfast place by their coffee and both of these serve good Joe.
Incline Vilage – If your skiing Diamond Peak or Mt. Rose there is only one place you should be stopping – that’s the WIldflower Cafe – it cozy – it smells good and they know how to fry up potatoes. I try to eat healthy – ok – sometimes – and the Wildflower always offers a nice selection of fresh fruit salad if you want to sub out the hash browns. I am always amazed at how good their egg white scrambles with veggies taste – I bet they sneak in a little yolk!!
Kings Beach – In any destination there can only be one King of the breakfast spots and how appropriate that this one is in Kings Beach – The Log Cabin is by far Tahoe’s best – why you ask – how do I begin. The juice is always fresh squeezed, the menu in diverse – lobster Benedict, smoked salmon scramble to pecan waffles. The atmosphere is so cozy with a little pot belly stove burning real wood. To top it all off – its a real log cabin – how cool is that!
Tahoe Vista – I love The Old Post Office – if for no other reason than if you sit on the deck or out on the enclosed porch you can bring your pooch to breakfast. My doggies love their bacon, especially served under the table with a side of sausage. As for me – I am a freak for their biscuits and gravy – even better than my mother -in-laws – but don’t tell her I said so!
Tahoe City – If your on your way to Squawlly or Alpine and you are feeling a little – shall we say less than on your game due to an evening of “indulging” – stop at Rosies – where the friendly bar tenders will fix you right up with a Ramos Fizz or a Mimosa and top it off with their yummy swedish pancakes with Lingonberry sauce. You’ll be better in no time.
Squaw Valley – so you get to Squaw at 7:30 and no one told you the Funitel does not run until 8 – not to fret – just stop in the Blue Onion for the best Chingalingas on the planet – what is that you ask? Well honestly, I am not quite sure but it does contain eggs, green tomato’s, I think Doritos, cheese and not sure what else but damn its good.
Ok I have made myself hungry so Bon Appetite – and happy skiing.
CR Johnson a son of Squaw Valley dies today at age 26
February 24th, 2010I was at Squaw this afternoon when word started to spread about a bad accident above Headwall – it was not long before the word was out that is was CR Johnson – a beloved 26 year old and amazing freeskier. I remembered years ago when CR was hurt and in a coma. I brought back memories of my son Alex and his own blackout after a snowboard injury while boarding at Mammoth. It’s every parents nightmare. CR worked his way back to health and today was skiing with JT Holmes and Scott Gaffney – two great guys who lost their good friend Shane McConkey last year. It’s been a tough few years for those guys and my heart goes out to them and CR’s family. It is a loss, as a mom ,I do not think I could survive. I remember CR in the movie Seven Sunny Days – he talks about his accident and it is prophetic when he says -” that the thrill he gets from skiing is worth dying for”.I fought back tears when I watched it a few minutes ago on YouTube, and I remember crying the first time I heard him say it when I saw the movie a few years ago. It made me think that it could be any of us or our children at any time. I love skiing – the speed – the thrill – the fact that I will never be “good enough”. Those are all reasons I do it, even when my knees hurt, and its why I made my kids do it all those weekends as Squaw Mighty Mites and beyond. I echo your words CR – the enjoyment and thrills it has given me over the years make me realize that I would rather live with the risk than give it up now or ever. Rest in Peace CR – you are a beautiful young man – with a beautiful heart, who gave all his X-games winnings one year to charity. You are going to make one hell of an angel! Love to you.
The virtues of ski villages
February 22nd, 2010I admit to being a spoiled rotten Tahoe local, but this weekend I had the chance to be the ultimate Tahoe tourist while skiing and staying with some friends in the village at Squaw. I will say upfront that I highly recommend staying in a ski village as the ultimate ski vacation experience. How great is it to wake up- put on your boots in your warm condo, see fresh snow, make the first lift up KT22 – get all the fresh stuff – ski till you just can’t ski anymore, hot tub, nap, wake – get ready for the evening – grab a great meal – bar hop – walk back to your cozy condo – sleep, shower rinse and repeat!! It is awesome – no worries about driving, weather, roads etc. Just pure skiing and fun. I only live 6 miles away mind you – but if I ever make a move from my lakeside cottage – I am buying a condo in the village! For the moment I will rely on the kindness of my friends who rent condos in the villages of Squaw, Northstar and Heavenly and stay on their living room fold-outs in return for all the years they had no money and had to sleep on my couch. Its good to have friends who still ski and are still gainfully employed. Maybe I will take a “staycation” at a village in Tahoe myself. Its a great way to make a ski vacation really vacationy.
